Team Train Wreck: Are you on a dysfunctional team?

Is your team so bad you can’t look away?

We’ve almost all been on a team at one point or another that plain and simple, was a mess. And depending on where we were in our career, we eventually jumped ship, or, perhaps, bided our time, waiting it out. Sometimes it was poor team habits and dynamics; it may have been the overall corporate culture, or maybe it was a truly useless leader. Whatever the reason, for at least at time, you suffered through. Or maybe, you’re living the nightmare right now.

Just like binge watching shows is addictive, so are paychecks. So you make it work. But, for you, which of these teams sounds the most familiar?

1. Game of Thrones

There’s no way to sugar coat. This work place is a war zone. With constant power struggles and overt conflict, you’re just trying to stay alive.

2. Breaking Bad

The boss started out okay, but something shifted. You were rolling along and now you’re not sure if your team leader is nutty, evil or perhaps, brilliant. Do you stick around to cash in or, save your career and reputation now?

3. House of Cards

Everything looks great on the surface. But back room deals and office politics are leaving you unsure of who exactly you can trust. Open communication? Ha!

4. Mad Men

The job perks can be REALLY amazing, but half of the team is definitely benefiting, while the other doesn’t get to share in the credit.

Have you got a show of your own you’d like to share? What have some of your horror stories been? What was your response?

When you’re trapped in one of these scenarios, it may feel hopeless.

But culture shifts can happen. They take time and effort.

Quite honestly, one team building event is not going to be enough to fix it. There are some strategies you can use though.

Two places you can begin:

  1. Examine your team habits
  2. Look at scheduling an in depth team retreat
