Team Building for Small Teams

What are my options for small teams?

We get calls frequently from small teams wanting team building options. Some of the best team building companies out there won’t even talk to them because of their size or budget. Generally speaking, we’d consider a group small if they are under 20. And they still have lots of options. PS – One of our regular (and favorite!) clients has been with us for years and only has 6 team members!

Sticker shock!

Yes, pricing can be a real issue for small teams. Whether your group has 12 or 1200 participants, there are still facilitators and staff to be paid, materials and parking expenses and more. Those costs don’t all get smaller just because you have fewer people. But with that said, being flexible with your schedule may allow you to get a more negotiable rate. Being open to other dates or times of the day would allow your group to fit in between already scheduled programs.

Go for more, not less

If your budget allows, a team building retreat or half day program can be a fantastic way to get the best bang for your buck. You can really dig into building skills to make your team more effective. Whether communication, collaboration, problem solving skills or more, taking the time away from the office is a great investment into your team’s performance.

Focus on flexibility

You can also get flexible with the program options. Give-back/CSR options tend to be more expensive because of the materials or items being donated. There are more logistics that go into planning those type of events as well including procuring the donation items, coordinating with and delivery to the designated charity. If you allow the PlayWorks Group team (or your preferred team building company) to select the program, we can make suggestions about which programs have lower costs and less prep involved.

DIY

Another option, of course, is PlayWorks Group DIY Toolkit programs. These are a real price performer for small teams. If you have a strong facilitator or in-house talent, these are a great choice for keeping costs low and engagement high. You receive all the instructions and guidance you need including set up and shopping lists with links. With a growing list of selections, you can find the ideal program to implement on your own.

Other options

And then you can always opt for something like one of the local escape rooms in your local area. These can be affordable options where your small group must work together to solve puzzles and figure out clues to get out of the simulation room. Or if working together is not as important to you, an activity like putt-putt or bowling can be a fun way for your group to network, blow of steam and have fun. This wouldn’t provide a true team building experience, but certainly entertaining social activities can be a great way to build relationships within your small teams.
